Book Discussion Guide
1.  Discuss Emily Griffith.  How could a woman with such a limited background accomplish so much?  Are there other outstanding women in history that she reminds you of?  What do you think motivated Emily?

2.  If Emily were to try to open her unique school today, what obstacles would she face?  Do you think it would be easier to open this unique school in 1916 or 2006?  Contrast and compare the conditions of 1916 to today, 2006.

3.  Were there any parts of the school history that surprised you?  When were the "glory days" for the school?

4.  The school experienced a major paradigm shift in 1993 when it was forced to begin charging tuition.  How do you think Emily would have handled this move?

5.  Did you find the twenty-four student stories interesting?  Which story was your favorite?  Why?

6.  Of all the students profiled, who do you think overcame the greatest obstacles?  Explain your thoughts.  Which student showed the most courage in telling his/her story?

7.  Was the author fairly descriptive?  Did you like her writing style?  Did you like the way the book was organized and laid out?  Were there sufficient differences between the twenty-four student stories to hold your interest?  Identify a couple of favorite passages and read out loud.

8.  Were the historical pictures helpful?  Did you have a favorite?

9.  What was the major theme of the book?  Does the book go beyond Emily Griffith Opportunity School and Denver, Colorado?
